Turn on multi-factor authentication
Adding a second step at sign-in, such as an app code, stops many account takeovers even when a password leaks. Start with email, banking and cloud storage.
Use a password manager
Long, unique passwords for every account are only realistic with a manager. Share access to team accounts through the manager, not through chat messages.
Install updates promptly
Many attacks use problems that already have a fix. Turn on automatic updates for devices, browsers and key applications.
Back up, then test the restore
Keep copies of important files in a separate place, and try restoring a file once. A backup you have never tested is a hope, not a plan.
Practice spotting phishing
Slow down on messages that create urgency, ask for payment changes or link to a sign-in page. Check the sender and go to the website yourself instead of clicking.
Write a one-page response plan
Decide who to call, which accounts to lock and how to tell customers if something goes wrong. Decisions made calmly in advance are better than decisions made during a crisis.
