Five Habits of Effective Negotiators and Diplomats

Preparation, listening, patience, clarity and respect for culture.

Prepare thoroughly

Know your goals, your limits and the other side's likely interests before you sit down.

Listen for interests, not positions

What a party says it wants is often different from why it wants it. Questions that uncover interests open more options.

Be patient

Trust and agreement usually take time. Rushing can cost more than waiting.

Be precise in language

Ambiguous wording causes disputes later. Confirm what was agreed in writing and in plain terms.

Respect culture and context

Customs about time, hierarchy and directness differ. Learning them is part of the work, not an extra.
