Honorary Doctorate Program

An honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) represents Nation Builders University’s highest form of institutional recognition. Conferred not for academic coursework or credits, it honors exceptional, demonstrated leadership, humanitarian impact, scientific advancement, or civic transformation aligned with NBU's core mission: "Build a Nation, One Leader at a Time."
Regulatory Disclosure & Institutional Status NBU is establishing this Honorary Doctorate framework as part of its ongoing institutional development. NBU is NOT currently licensed, accredited, approved, or authorized to confer degrees, including honorary degrees. No honorary doctorates will be conferred, nor will conferral certificates be issued, until NBU completes the DC Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) process.
Authorized Honorary Designations
When active, honorary conferrals will be strictly restricted to the following designations aligned with NBU's academic divisions:
Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.): Recognizes profound contributions to the humanities, human rights advocacy, philanthropic leadership, and civic transformation.
Doctor of Laws (LL.D.): Recognizes notable achievement in diplomacy, statecraft, global governance, or humanitarian legal work.
Doctor of Commercial Science (D.C.Sc.): Recognizes transformative enterprise leadership, economic development, or entrepreneurial innovation.
Doctor of Science (D.Sc.): Recognizes exceptional advancement in technology, data systems, research, or public infrastructure.
Selection Criteria
Conferral is strictly merit-based. Candidates must demonstrate verifiable, non-transactional impact by satisfying at least two of the following criteria:
Eminent Public & Philanthropic Service: A documented pattern of sustained impact over a minimum of ten (10) years within a community, national, or international sector.
Alignment with Nation-Building Ethos: Clear evidence of advancing human rights, conflict mitigation, educational access, or technological infrastructure in underserved regions.
Distinction in a Specialized Field: Corporate, academic, scientific, or policy achievements that have measurably advanced standard practice at a national or global level.
(Note: Financial contributions or philanthropic gifts to the university do not constitute eligibility for honorary degree conferral.)
Nomination & Governance Workflow
A rigorous, four-stage review pipeline ensures institutional integrity and academic rigor:
Stage 1 — Formal Nomination: Candidates cannot self-nominate. Nominations require a complete dossier (CV, supporting statement, and independent attestation letters) submitted by an NBU Board Member, Department Head, alumnus, or verified partner organization.
Stage 2 — Committee Screening: The University Honorary Degrees Committee (UHDC) conducts thorough background, academic, and reputational vetting.
Stage 3 — Senate Vote: Approval requires a two-thirds supermajority vote from the Academic Senate and the Board of Organizers.
Stage 4 — Proclamation: Following full institutional licensure, confirmed honorees are formally notified and recognized during an official University ceremony.
Revocation Policy: NBU reserves the right to revoke an honorary designation by a majority vote of the Executive Board if a recipient is later found to have engaged in serious criminal conduct, fraud, or actions materially inconsistent with the University's core values.
